Sanctus

In the early 1960’s there arrived a recording of the Congolese Mass, called Missa Luba which amazed and delighted western audiences. The Choral piece called "Sanctus" is part of the mass Missa Luba.

"Sanctus" from "Missa Luba was first used in Lindsay Anderson's 1968 film "If..." featuring Clockwork Orange star Malcolm McDowell.

In Lost and Delirious, "Sanctus"  was performed by the Muungano National Choir, Nairobi, KENYA, Kenya's premier national choir. Formed 1979, it is very well known around the world, and was featured at the World Choral Symposium at Rotterdam. Their 1998 European tour, was a resounding success, with sold out concerts in Austria, Germany and France.

Original lyrics or “Sanctus” in Latin language:

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus
Dominus Deus Sabaoth!
Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis!

An interesting note on this “Sabaoth” is the transliterated Hebrew word denoting 'armies' or 'hosts'.

English translation:

Holy, holy, holy
Lord God of hosts!
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest!

In Lost and Delirious we can see the girls of the boarding school singing the song in the school chapel (actually the real name of the chapel is St.Mark's Chapel). Unlikely for a mass we can see the drums as a reminiscence towards the African roots of the Missa Luba.

While the mass, Mouse watches Paulie and Tori holding hands, another meaningful emotional sign for their relationship. Even though they are among many other students, they still manage to keep the secret of their relationship, only Mouse knows about.
